About this book
The book’s geographical discussion identifies grazing and wine growing as the predominant agricultural pursuits throughout the Pyrenees, linking economic conditions with the history of a country. The account describes considerable raising of sheep, horses and mules, with some beef production and some cultivation of grain.
The chapter on Béarn and the Béarnais says that the Béarnais and Basques have no historical monuments in their country from before the Roman invasion and that Roman monuments are nearly nonexistent. The discussion of surviving evidence notes occasional finds of medals and coins that supply stories neglected by chroniclers or fill gaps otherwise left unbridged.
