About this book

In this book on Belgium, George W. T. Omond has fifteen chapters, from The Sands Opposite England to A Short History and The Belgian Army: The Congo. The illustrations are by Amédée Forestier, with titles such as The Dunes, A Shrimper on Horseback, Coxyde and The Vegetable Market, Bruges. A seaside passage describes bathing machines, men called sauveteurs who watch swimmers from a boat, and dancing on the digue to a barrel-organ.

Another chapter describes Flanders as flat, with canals and long straight roads paved with stones. A passage on pageants mentions circus processions with dromedaries, elephants, sham giants and pasteboard whales and dragons. The story of St. Evermaire tells of a good man who went on a pilgrimage to the Hesbaye, near the River Meuse, and, with his companions, came to a great wood and went to a village to ask for shelter. The book dates from 1909.
