About this book

An injured stranger bursts into Ling Foo's Shanghai shop on a stormy night, bringing danger into a merchant's ordinary business. Three men follow and carry the stranger away, leaving Ling Foo frightened and unable to explain what he has witnessed. Harold MacGrath opens his adventure novel by giving chance a powerful role in human affairs, then makes that idea immediate through this unsettling encounter.

The story also moves aboard a yacht, where Jane Norman finds herself between Cleigh and his son Dennison. The two men refuse to speak to each other, and Jane hopes to overcome their stubbornness even as the voyage's direction remains uncertain. Music, books and breakfast provide an uneasy domestic setting for their predicament. Shanghai streets and life at sea give this 1921 novel its changing backdrop, with suspense arising both from unexplained events and from people trying to understand one another.
