About this book
By the Christmas Fire is a book by Samuel McChord Crothers. The contents list names pieces among others titled The Bayonet-Poker, On Being a Doctrinaire and The Ignominy of Being Grown-Up. A note says Christmas and the Spirit of Democracy appeared originally in Everybody's Magazine, the four other essays in the Atlantic Monthly.
Under the heading The Bayonet-Poker, a speaker sits by a Christmas fire and gives it a poke with a bayonet now and then, an old-fashioned British bayonet picked up in a little shop in Birmingham for two shillings. A speaker in the text asks, 'Is not that the way of the world?', and says the strong get what they want and the weak have to make the best of it. The text says the cave of Adullam has always been the most prolific literary centre. The text says most writers of decided individuality are incited by a more or less iconoclastic impulse.
