About this book
Discoveries, A Volume of Essays, is by William Butler Yeats. The contents list Prophet, Priest and King, The Praise of Old Wives’ Tales and Why the Blind Man in Ancient Times was made a Poet. One piece calls a convent school a delight to the imagination and the eyes, and describes the light from a great mullioned window, cut off at the middle, falling aslant upon rows of clean and seemingly happy children.
A speaker says, "I am too modern fully to enjoy Tintoretto’s Creation of the Milky Way." A speaker says that Shakespeare, Tintoretto and nearly all the great men of the renaissance had minds that were never quiescent. The volume also says there was little separation between holy and common things, and that a man felt himself near sacred presences when he turned his plough from the slope of Cruachmaa or of Olympus.
