About this book
A packet of letters left among her uncle's papers gives Christabel Gilmore a family history she never knew. Her father, Ernst von Dreschler, Count Melnik, describes his disgrace in Hungary, years of imprisonment and an accusation connected with Count Stephen's death. Christabel learns that he hoped she might have the courage and skill to clear his name. Arthur W. Marchmont places this personal task amid rival nobles and political plans for the Hungarian throne.
The opening then finds Christabel playing chess with General von Erlanger, testing his patience while revealing how much she knows about stolen ducal jewels. Her first-person account turns conversation into a contest of judgment, concealment and nerve. A later encounter with Karl brings private loyalties and pressure to marry into the intrigue.
