About this book

Money and family pride set the terms of a marriage proposal before the young people can answer for themselves. Peter Courtlandt faces losing his ancestral property, while Glamorgan, a wealthy man who began in the coalfields, wants his daughter Geraldine to marry into an established family. He offers to clear Courtlandt's debts if Stephen marries her, and threatens foreclosure if the offer is refused. The opening makes a family conversation into a contest over loyalty, ambition and the right to choose.

Later scenes move into ranch life, where cut fences threaten a prized herd of Shorthorns and Stephen must respond to suspicions surrounding a former manager. Riding horses, cattle work and lively exchanges give the novel a ranch setting alongside its romance.
