About this book
When I Was Czar by Arthur W. Marchmont is identified on its title page as a romance. The contents list chapters titled A Letter Home, Prince Kalkov’s Proposition, His Majesty a Prisoner and Concerning the Value of Hostages. The narrator describes standing still on sentry duty, hearing footsteps on gravel and seeing a man creep warily toward the house.
Helga steps onto the verandah and looks about as if seeking the narrator, who gives no sign of his presence. A visitor greets Frank as his brother in broken English, with a very effusive foreign manner. The narrator says he could never be anything but a friend, even as a prisoner.
