About this book

Before Nero takes the throne, Jacob Abbott introduces the seaside villas of Antium, the family into which the future emperor was born, and the uneasy relationship between Rome's Senate and its armies. This historical biography places Nero within a wider account of imperial rule, with Agrippina, Caligula and Claudius helping to explain the world that shaped his childhood and rise to power.

The narrative moves between descriptions of Roman institutions and tense scenes within the palace. In the episode involving Britannicus, private family conflict becomes a matter of public reputation, while Agrippina's distress exposes the strain beneath court ceremony. Abbott tells events in a connected, explanatory style and states in his preface that he follows ancient accounts. Readers interested in Roman rulers can find both a life of Nero and an example of how an earlier historian made political history accessible through people, places and incidents.
