About this book

Jacob Abbott's Pyrrhus belongs to his Makers of History series and tells the life of the king of Epirus, who was born a few years after the death of Alexander the Great. The story starts in infancy: at the age of two, Pyrrhus was carried out of his father's house by household attendants to escape a danger.

Abbott explains how Epirus and Macedon were bound together through Olympias, the mother of Alexander, and how the quarrels of the Macedonian court drew in their neighbours. Later chapters follow the wars in Macedon, the campaign in Italy against Rome, the Sicilian campaign, the retreat from Italy and the last campaign at Sparta.

In the preface Abbott says he repeats the ancient accounts as they stand and warns readers when a tale may be more legend than fact. The result is a readable introduction to a general whose name lives on in the phrase Pyrrhic victory.
