About this book
Cagliostro became a Freemason before leaving England, during an interlude in the persecution to which the account says he had been subjected. The account dates Cagliostro’s becoming a Freemason to April 12, 1777. The lodge described is the Esperance, which met in a room of the King’s Head in Gerard Street, Soho.
The discussion of Egyptian Masonry rejects the opinion that Cagliostro used it merely to obtain money and denies any authenticated instance of personal profit through imposture. The account describes impostures in which occult results were forged on occasions and under conditions known to oppose the operation of such powers, and wonders were attributed to supernatural causes.
