About this book
The book examines ecclesiastical vestments, their development, and their history. The description of the Armenian Church says clergy may remain married when marriage has taken place before ordination. Unmarried priests’ ordinary dress is described as a black or dark purple cassock with a broad belt, a gown, and a cope during the recital of offices.
The argument about tunics contrasts the sleeveless colobium with the sleeved dalmatica as forms said to have competed for the favour of the Roman people. The discussion credits a decree of Pope Sylvester, commanding all ecclesiastics under his authority to adopt the sleeved form, with establishing its use in church. A list of scenes and emblems names St Mary with the Holy Child, burial, assumption, and coronation.
