About this book
Mediæval Heresy & the Inquisition is a book by Arthur Stanley Turberville. The preface says the aim of the book is to provide, within a short space, an account of the heresies of the Middle Ages and of the attitude of the Church towards them. The preface calls the book a brief essay in the history not only of dogma but, inasmuch as it is concerned with the repression of heresy by means of the Inquisition, of judicature also.
The text names the neo-Manichæan heresy, known as Catharism or Paulicinianism, along with Waldensianism and Joachitism. The text says that our knowledge of the heretics is almost entirely derived from their adversaries, and that unbiased contemporary testimony there is none. The text says the fall of Montségur and the holocaust of heretics which followed it, together with improved organization, enabled the Inquisition to make better headway.
