About this book

In July 1857, Henry David Thoreau sets out for the Maine woods with a companion and hires Penobscot guide Joseph Polis for a canoe expedition. The account begins with preparations in Bangor and Oldtown, including provisions, waterproof clothing and the awkward business of transporting a canoe by stage. Plans for travel toward the Allegash Lakes bring practical arrangements into close contact with Thoreau's curiosity about the country and the people he meets.

Along the lakeshore, bird calls and daily camp routines become subjects for close observation. Thoreau listens to the loon and the white-throated sparrow, notices dew on the blankets, and considers the usefulness of Polis's clothing and tools. These details give readers a sense of travel as both physical work and attentive looking. Edited by Clifton Johnson, the 1916 volume offers a compact account of woodland travel for readers drawn to nature writing and firsthand descriptions of Maine.
