About this book

This is Volume VI of The Writings of Henry David Thoreau in twenty volumes, an edition limited to six hundred copies. It gathers Thoreau's letters, with editorial notes between them. One letter, written from Concord on February 10, 1838, is addressed to John Thoreau at Taunton and begins with a question about gunflints, with Thoreau reporting what the Americana and Dr. Jacob Bigelow's Technology say about how flints are made.

The notes mention Tahatawan, the mythical sachem of Musketaquid, the Algonquin name for the Concord River and region, and say that in 1837 the two brothers were sportsmen over the Concord meadows. Another passage covers a visit to New Bedford beginning on October 1, with Ricketson and others, sailing about the bay and visiting ponds in Middleborough. The volume includes an index with page references.
