About this book
Two boys, Harry and Ralph, learn woodworking through conversation in this book by Edwin W. Foster. Harry is introduced to the coping saw, and a picture frame with an elliptical opening is sawed out and whittled to the line. The curve proves hard to smooth, so they design a second frame in straight lines, and Ralph draws a third. The younger boy asks to be taught the drawing instruments, and a chapter titled Mechanical Drawing follows.
Other passages cover a tabourette that calls for forty mortise and tenon joints, with advice to letter each part, mark the legs a b c d and work in pairs. Figures are numbered through the text, and there are short notes on trees and their wood, including the larch, which drops its needles in the fall.
