About this book
The book describes surveying and levelling instruments in terms of their construction, qualities, selection, preservation, adjustments and uses, alongside apparatus employed by civil engineers and surveyors in the field. The instructions explain how a level can be adjusted at night using a fine cross on paper fixed to a wall and brightly illuminated by a candle or gas burner. The discussion warns that tubes which are not quite straight can allow considerable displacement of the object-glass when drawn out for focusing on nearby objects.
An operation involving a telescope set at the slope angle describes turning toward another peg and adjusting the cross web to align with it. The account of the reflecting eye-piece explains its use in observing small stars by illuminating the front of the webs or lines.
