About this book

The prefatory note describes a collection of Sir John Tenniel’s cartoons intended to select the more memorable examples that appeared in Punch during the preceding fifty years. The first cartoon in the collection is dated 1851, and the last is Sir John Tenniel’s final cartoon in January, 1901. The explanatory notes are grouped together and combined with the table of contents for reference.

The note for King Cotton Bound describes the prevention of cotton exports by the Civil War in the United States and the resulting misery in manufacturing districts. The note for Saved! records England, Russia and France agreeing jointly to guarantee a loan to Greece.
