About this book
Lord Lyons is a record of British diplomacy by Thomas Wodehouse Legh Newton. The preface says that Lord Lyons carefully preserved his correspondence, whether official, semi-official or private, and that the work was compiled almost entirely from those papers. The writer draws to some extent on a diary and recollections of five years spent serving on Lord Lyons's staff at the Paris Embassy.
A letter headed Paris reports that the Emperor seemed in remarkably good health and spirits during the writer's week at Compiègne. Another letter reports that Thiers spoke freely and confidentially but said positively that giving up Blanqui was impossible.
