About this book
Shelter, food and workable soil dominate Watkin Tench's account of early Port Jackson. Drawing on daily notes and excursions into the surrounding country, he records the settlement's affairs from July 1788 to December 1791. The opening describes stores under fragile thatch, officers living in tents and soldiers turning to building and cultivation. Convict labour and the movement of ships connect daily work with the struggle to obtain supplies.
Travelling diaries and observations on the climate, plants, animals and people of New South Wales accompany the chronological narrative. Tench reconsiders his early judgment of local residents, acknowledging that attacks by settlers helped cause conflict. A later episode follows a group of convicts who take the governor's cutter and venture out to sea. Readers interested in the settlement's history can examine its practical difficulties alongside the explanations and changing opinions of a participant.
