About this book
Castillo de San Marcos is a handbook, A Guide to Castillo de San Marcos National Monument in Florida, produced by the National Park Service. The handbook says the Castillo de San Marcos National Monument is located in the longest continuously inhabited community founded by Europeans in the United States. The handbook tells the intercultural story of the long effort to build the Castillo and the emergence of a new Nation.
In one raid the raiders took booty that probably amounted to only a few thousand pesos and about 70 prisoners, ransomed most of their prisoners for meat, water, and firewood, and headed out to sea on June 5. The text says St. Augustine, though isolated and small, was the keystone in the defense of Florida, a way station on Spain's great commercial route. A section called The Drawbridge says pulling up the drawbridge was like locking the door.
