About this book
The handbook asks what life was like in North America 20 million years ago, long before the arrival of man. The account describes Cook improving the ranch by planting hundreds of trees and carrying water to help establish them. The ranch history records the change of name to Agate Springs Ranch in recognition of native moss agates and the valley’s many springs.
The geological account describes the Rockies and Great Plains slowly rising at the beginning of the Cenozoic Era, about 65 million years ago. The description follows sediments carried west into the Pacific Ocean, deposited on land, or retained in basins within the Rockies. The account explains that mountain building and erosion tended to cancel each other out, preventing the mountains from reaching great heights.
