About this book

Royal reputation is the starting point for Balzac’s account of Catherine de Medici and the struggles surrounding the French crown. His introduction challenges the way popular stories become accepted history, arguing that Catherine’s political ability has been obscured by hostile accounts. The work places her among rival families, religious reformers and rulers competing for authority in sixteenth-century France.

Historical argument gives way to scenes of court confrontation. At Orleans, the Guises impose military discipline while members of the States-general gather, and the Prince de Conde faces a royal summons whose promise of safety becomes a matter of public dispute. Dialogue, gestures and ceremonial rank reveal the pressure beneath official courtesies. Readers interested in French historical fiction will find both a forcefully stated interpretation of Catherine and a close attention to how power appears in rooms, letters and encounters.
