About this book
In France in 1650, Albert de Lalande sees service in Paris as a way to recover his family's lost estate. Roland Belloc, a soldier attached to Cardinal Mazarin, encourages him to seek his fortune amid the struggles surrounding the young Louis XIV and Anne of Austria. Albert's hopes become more urgent after he overhears a secret conversation involving his cousin Henri and Baron Maubranne, the present owner of the family home.
Herbert Hayens tells this historical adventure through Albert's own voice, bringing family pride into contact with rival political loyalties. The Paris described in the opening shifts quickly from festivities to barricades, while a later scene finds Albert under guard, trying to discover what his captors are planning. Readers who enjoy intrigue can follow both the public struggle for power and the smaller calculations of a young man eager to improve his family's fortunes.
