About this book

Part of Alexandre Dumas's sweeping cycle on the French Revolution, this historical romance carries the reader into the first convulsions of 1789, when the fall of the Bastille and the march on Versailles brought crown and people into open conflict. Real figures such as Louis XVI, Marie Antoinette, and the schemer Cagliostro move among Dumas's invented heroes, with the peasant Ange Pitou close to the action. Dumas blends documented history with adventure, loyalty, and love, showing ordinary people swept up by forces far larger than themselves. It offers the same momentum and colour that made his musketeer novels famous, applied to one of history's great upheavals.

About the author

Alexandre Dumas

Alexandre Dumas wrote at industrial scale, with a workshop behind him, and the most important member of it was Auguste Maquet, who drafted plots and researched the novels that went out under Dumas's name alone.
