About this book
Sir James Emerson Tennent's account of Ceylon is described on its title page as physical, historical and topographical, with notices of its natural history, antiquities and productions, illustrated by maps, plans and drawings. This is Volume I of the fourth, thoroughly revised edition, London 1860. The contents begin with Part I, Physical Geography, and a first chapter on geology, mineralogy and gems.
A passage on the island's animals mentions earlier writing on them, including a work by Dr. Kelaart, papers by Mr. Layard and Knox's narrative of his captivity. Another passage describes the pingo, the yoke on which a Singhalese coolie carries a load in two equal portions, and compares it with a similar yoke used in Tahiti. Another quoted passage records a king speaking of tanks and canals that he has had dug and repaired.
