About this book
The Wild Elephant and the Method of Capturing and Taming it in Ceylon is a book by Sir J. Emerson Tennent. The dedication says that much of the information contained in the volume was collected in the course of journeys throughout the mountains and forests of Ceylon. The contents list names topics such as, among others, an ear for sounds and music, endurance of pain, and being subject to tooth-ache.
The list of illustrations includes, among others, Noosing Wild Elephants, Mode of tying an Elephant and Impotent Fury. The text says that when every wild elephant had been noosed and tied up, the scene presented was truly oriental, with from one to two thousand natives, many of them in gaudy dresses and armed with spears, crowded about the enclosures. The index includes entries such as, among others, Dakra, a poison for elephants in Bengal.
