About this book
James Emerson Tennent's volume of 1861 sets out narratives and anecdotes about the habits and instincts of the mammals, birds, reptiles, fishes and insects of Ceylon. The title page also lists a monograph of the elephant, with a description of how it is captured and trained, and engravings from original drawings.
The Wanderoo monkeys are described, including the larger mountain species that the natives call the Maha or Great Wanderoo, whose loud howl is heard in the mountain jungles. A list of birds gives each species its scientific name with a note on where it was found, such as the yellow-eared bulbul and Layard's mountain jay. Another passage describes the Calling Crabs that run along the shore near Colombo.
