The preface says the making of the book was prompted by the fact that with the season 1907-08 the Metropolitan Opera House in New York completed an existence of twenty-five years. The text says Richmond Hill had in its palmy days been the villa home of Aaron Burr.

The text says that William Niblo, who built Niblo's Garden and managed it with consummate cleverness, had been a successful coffee-house keeper downtown. The text says the boxes of the Metropolitan Opera House have a high market value to-day, but are a coveted asset only because they are visible symbols of social distinction. The text says the lesson had not yet been learned that an institution like the Metropolitan Opera House can only be maintained by a subvention in perpetuity.

Henry Edward Krehbiel

Henry Edward Krehbiel reviewed music for the New-York Tribune for more than forty years, from 1880 until his death in 1923, and did as much as anyone to build an American concert audience that knew what it was hearing. How to Listen to Music, first published in 1896, went through edition after edition doing what its title says.
