About this book
Chopin and Other Musical Essays is by Henry T. Finck. The contents list gives, among others, essays called Chopin, the Greatest Genius of the Pianoforte, How Composers Work and Music and Morals. One passage says that Louis Ehlert, in his appreciative essay on Chopin, comes to the conclusion that Chopin is certainly not to be ranked with such giants as Bach and Beethoven.
The text states, "No doubt Chopin is, in some respects, inferior to Bach and Beethoven, but in other respects he is quite as unquestionably superior to them." The text says it was only ten years before he composed his opera that Schumann wrote to a friend, You ought to write more for the voice. The text says that in Germany the length of Wagner's and Meyerbeer's operas is not so objectionable as here, because there the opera commences at seven.
