About this book

Annals of Music in America by Henry C. Lahee is a chronological record of significant musical events from 1640 to the present day, with comments on the periods into which the work is divided. Its preface says the aim is as complete a record as possible of the beginning and progress of music in the United States, and it names early firsts such as the printing of the first book on music and the importation of the first pipe organs.

The entries are dated by year, month and day. Those for 1796 list B. Carr's opera The Archers of Switzerland in New York and works by Gluck and Haydn in Charleston. For 1798 they note the opening of the Park Theatre in New York and the first public performance of Hail Columbia in Philadelphia. Entries for 1907 name works given at the Metropolitan Opera House, at Carnegie Hall and by the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Lists of places and years also appear.
