About this book
Chapters on Spanish Literature is by James Fitzmaurice-Kelly. The preface says the Trustees of the Hispanic Society of America invited the author to give a course of lectures on Spanish literature in the United States, and that the chapters contained in the present volume are the result. The Cid is described as no idealist who lived wholly in the present, and as anything but a saint. The text says all heroes are apt to lose their glamour when dragged from the twilight of tradition and poetry into the fierce blaze of fact and history, and that the Cid is no exception.
A chapter headed The Works of Cervantes says that Cervantes was not free from such natural infirmities. Footnotes cite Durán and Primavera, among others, by number.
