About this book
The work is a history of Yiddish literature in the nineteenth century. The preface describes a library containing several hundred volumes of what the writer calls the best Judeo-German literature, assembled through continued attention and sometimes mere chance. The discussion of language borrowing describes foreign languages as carriers of new ideas and says close intellectual contact between nations has always resulted in a mixture of languages.
The account says Goldfaden started The New York Illustrated Gazette, described as the first of its kind in Judeo-German, but that the venture lived only a short time. The account describes the eighties as a period of interest and far-reaching importance to Jewish letters, during which Judeo-German journalism received its fullest development.
