About this book
Samplers and Tapestry Embroideries is by Marcus B. Huish. An epigraph from The Needle's Excellency says that though the country is filled with ladies and gentlewomen skilled in this rare art, here they may discern some things to teach them. The frontispiece embroidery, showing Henry VIII., Edward VI., Mary, and Elizabeth, may date from the Accession of Queen Elizabeth, in which case it is the earliest specimen of an embroidery picture that the author has seen.
The text says the sampler of Anne Gower, first wife of Governor Endicott, is now a cherished possession of the Essex Institute, Salem, Massachusetts. The text says that, as Governor Endicott's wife arrived at Salem in 1628 and died the following year, her sampler is the earliest authentic one on record. The list of illustrations includes The Judgment of Paris, about 1630, and Tapestry Embroidery: The Finding of Moses, about 1640, among others.
