About this book
The account of porcelain manufacture in Denmark reviews the conditions under which china factories existed in the eighteenth century. The discussion distinguishes hard paste, containing only natural elements in its body and glaze, from soft paste, whose body combines substitute materials. The explanation of soft paste describes its weaker resistance to high temperatures than true porcelain and a glaze that steel can scratch.
A letter to Lady Hamilton says the writer is sending her porcelain of Copenhagen manufacture because he knows she has a valuable china collection. The accompanying account says that Nelson undoubtedly procured specimens from the factory's best period before Müller had retired. The account leaves the identification and present collection of those porcelain examples in England a matter of conjecture.
