About this book
Chats on Oriental China explains the materials and manufacture of porcelain and pottery through definitions of glaze, porcelain clay and methods of kiln firing. The explanation of glaze defines the coating as glass or another vitrifiable substance with similar properties. The account of firing distinguishes the greatest kiln heat from the muffle kiln, where decoration was often fixed.
A discussion of decoration describes removing parts of the glaze, mainly in Holland at the end of the eighteenth century, to form arabesques and garlands. The chapter on imitations says that later hard-paste copies can be almost beyond detection except by an expert.
