About this book
The Practical Book of Oriental Rugs by G. Griffin Lewis is a guide to Oriental rugs. The text says there is no more fascinating study than that of Oriental rugs, and that few hobbies claim so absorbing a devotion. The text says that Plautus, Scipio, Horace, Pliny and Josephus all speak of rugs, and that Persia acquired the art from Babylon many centuries before Christ.
The book describes individual kinds of rug, among them the Shiraz and the Meshed. One entry gives mostly large sizes, seven to fifteen by ten to twenty-five feet, and says the rugs are especially suitable for living rooms, libraries, and halls. A list of topics includes colors of different nations, compressed air for cleaning rugs and coffee grounds used for aging rugs.
