About this book
Chaucer and His England is by G. G. Coulton, who is credited on the front matter with other books, among them From St. Francis to Dante. In one passage a quotation from an earlier writer calls England a strong and sturdy land, rich and full of mirth.
Under the heading Boyhood and Youth, the text takes up the name Chaucer. It says the poet's ancestors seem to have been makers of long hose who also traded as vintners, perhaps coming from Gascony, and thrived in London and East Anglia. Another passage tells how Queen Isabella went to Paris with her eldest son, and then fled to the Count of Hainault at Valenciennes, where young Edward was drawn to Philippa. A late passage considers Chaucer's report that he had lost letters patent for a yearly twenty pounds and a tun of wine.
