About this book
George Haven Putnam is the author of Books and Their Makers During the Middle Ages, and the title marks this one as Vol. I. A summary of contents of Volume II lists, among others, The First Printer-Publishers of France, Caxton and the Introduction of Printing into England, and Erasmus and his Books.
The text says that by the middle of the thirteenth century the number of the books required for use in the university courses had increased to such an extent that four catalogues were issued, one for each of the four Faculties. The text states that the formal constitution of the University of Paris dates from 1202. The text says that in Spain the earliest university was that of Palencia, which was founded in 1212. The text says counsels of this kind give some indication at least of the tendency in Poitiers, and doubtless also in Clugni, to devote to the old-time poetry and philosophy some of the hours.
