About this book
Ephraim Emerton's biography is subtitled The Humanist in the Service of the Reformation and gives the dates of Erasmus as 1467 to 1536. In Venice, Erasmus is received into a household of thirty-three people whose rooms for business sit under the same roof as the living quarters, and the text discusses his colloquy The Rich Miser, in which Andreas d'Asola is the person exposed to his humour.
Another passage deals with Hutten, who in the winter of 1521-22 drifts to Basel, seems to have wished to meet Erasmus and meets a flat refusal. A further discussion of early publishing says there was nothing to stop a printer from putting out any writing that came into his hands, and cites a dedicatory letter to Mountjoy saying that earlier editions of one of his works had been printed so badly that the errors might have been made on purpose.
