About this book
Children and Their Books is a book by James Hosmer Penniman. The text says the most vital educational problem will always be how to make the best use of the child's earlier years. The book says the imaginative faculty is one of the earliest to appear, and that a weakness of our educational systems is the failure to realize its importance.
A line in the book says whoever has a love of reading, however limited his means or however restricted his opportunities, may give himself, if he will, a good education. The book names Longfellow, Whittier, Lowell and Holmes, and says their works abound in teachings of the highest form of American patriotism. The book also mentions poems like Paul Revere's Ride, with which it says every child should be familiar.
