About this book
Children's Books and Their Illustrators is by Gleeson White and appears in the International Studio Special Winter-Number 1897-8. The text says there are some themes that by their very wealth of suggestion appal the most ready writer. The text asks whether Robert Louis Stevenson has not sung of Picture Books in Winter and The Land of Story Books so truly and clearly that it is dangerous for lesser folk to attempt essays in their praise.
The text names Walter Crane, Randolph Caldecott, and Kate Greenaway as three artists, often coupled together, who have really little in common, except that they all designed books for children published about the same period. Walter Crane is called the serious apostle of art for the nursery. The text says it would be a pity to confuse ephemeral curios with lasting works of fine art.
