About this book
A note to English Illustration 'The Sixties' says that this is a re-impression of the original edition of 1897 and that a few small errors have been corrected. The text speaks of the time that begins with a memory of the project for the Great Exhibition. The text says that people of those days still preserved a sentimental respect for the artist merely because he was an artist, quite apart from his technical accomplishment.
Ford Madox Brown's Prisoner of Chillon is called another masterpiece of its sort, and for it we are told the artist spent three days in a dissecting-room or a mortuary, the accounts differ, to watch the gradual change in a dead body. An entry for Morten, T. lists illustrations to Once a Week, Good Words and London Society, among others.
