About this book
Gleeson White describes the fabric of Salisbury Cathedral and gives a brief history of the see of Sarum. This is the second edition of 1898, revised, with eighteen additional illustrations and fifty in all. One passage discusses the family of Bishop Richard Poore, whose gift of the site is mentioned, and weighs the old theory that his name came from Poor or Pauper against a derivation from the word puer.
Elsewhere the text describes a chantry founded by Walter Lord Hungerford in 1429, removed from the nave in 1778 and turned into a family pew by the Earl of Radnor, with a superstructure of iron. Another chantry keeps traces of original colouring on its fan tracery roof, and the arms and initials of its founder on the cornice. The list of bishops includes Robert Abbott (1615-1618) and Martin Fotherby (1618-1620), with a quotation from Fuller on the Abbott brothers.
