About this book
Church Needlework: A Manual of Practical Instruction is by Hinda M. Hands. The preface says Miss Hands undertook the writing of the articles which form the basis of this volume, at the suggestion of the Editor of The Treasury. The dedication reads to our dear mother, the Holy Church, and says this little work is dedicated by one of her faithful daughters.
The text says that practicability is essential because it is in vain to draw a beautiful design which cannot be carried out by the needle and thread. Chapter II is headed On Materials and says that the best does not necessarily mean the most expensive, but the most genuine and the most suitable. The text says that if gold thread is used in the embroidery, it should also appear in the fringe, if not in the fall, at least in the head. A list of symbols describes the Cross as the universal emblem of Christianity, showing the length, breadth, depth, and height of the Love of God in Christ.
