About this book
Citizen or Subject? is a work by Francis X. Hennessy, whose title page names him as of the New York Bar. A chapter headed The Conventions Give the Consent says that the proposal which came from Philadelphia in 1787 was absolutely without precedent in history.
The text says Magna Charta was the grant of privilege from an omnipotent government to its subjects, and that all that subjects ever have are the revocable privileges granted by the master government. The text says that the Statute of '76 states the basic American law that there are no subjects in America. The text says that average Americans know and will remember the clear distinction recognized by the great jurist between "the people of America" and "the people of the several states." The text speaks of the four months' Convention at Philadelphia in 1787, which began on May 14 and whose last day was September 17.
