About this book
Experiments in Government and the Essentials of the Constitution is a work by Elihu Root. The preface says questions of general and permanent importance are seldom finally settled. The preface says a time comes when, with apparent suddenness, the ground of discussion shifts and the postulates are denied.
The text points to the Declaration of Independence, which holds that the individual citizen has certain inalienable rights, the right to life, to liberty, to the pursuit of happiness, and that government is not the source of these rights. The text names the Great Charter and quotes its pledge that no freeman shall be taken, or imprisoned, or be disseized of his free hold, or his liberties, or his free customs. The text says that in the eighteenth century life was simple, while to-day almost all Americans are dependent upon the action of a great number of other persons mostly unknown.
