About this book

The book is Civilization and Beyond: Learning From History, by Scott Nearing. The contents list a part called The Pageant of Experiments with Civilization, with chapters headed Experiments in Egypt and Eurasia and Rome's Outstanding Experiment, and a part called A Social Analysis of Civilization. The text says Egypt's history dawns on a well-organized society, the Old Kingdom, based on the productivity of the narrow, lush Nile Valley.

The text says civilization has proved to be not an opportunity for the ambitious, but a trap for the ignorant, inexperienced and unwary. The text also says students of social history have been tempted to draw a parallel between the biological life cycle of an individual and the sociological lifecycle of a civilization. The text says large scale research and experiment should go a long way toward developing the skills required by competent and successful planetary leadership.

About the author

Scott Nearing

Scott Nearing (1883–1983) was an American economist, educator, and political radical whose outspoken views repeatedly put him at odds with authority.
