About this book
The Next Step: A Plan for Economic World Federation is a book by Scott Nearing. The dedication says the book is dedicated to the task of emancipating the human race from economic servitude. The text says the telegraph, invented about 1837, laid the basis for instantaneous communication, and that the first trans-Atlantic cable (1858) annihilated the water barrier to thought.
The text says that nature has not scattered coal, iron, copper and sugarland over the earth in the same lavish way that she has distributed air and sunshine. The text describes a district committee that would be a large body, consisting of at least one representative from each of the plants or shops in the district. A reading list in the text gives Economic Consequences of the Peace, by J.M. Keynes, among works that are more up to date and in the same field.
