About this book
Cliges is a romance by Chrétien de Troyes, presented in a translation from the Old French. An emperor feels both joy at his son's ambition for valiant deeds and anxiety at the prospect of his departure. The emperor allows his son to take two barques filled with gold and silver, urging generosity, courtesy and good breeding. The emperor calls open-handedness the lady and queen who illumines all virtues.
Cliges asks a nurse whether an ill damsel will recover, greeting the nurse with expressions of love and esteem. Thessala applies herself to curing the lady, while John goes to supply a tower with appropriate provisions.
